Ōhau Court
Horowhenua, NZ
Un-built

Set on a ‘large lot’ site of more than half a hectare, this project organises a large brief into a series of masses that frame a range of habitable external spaces. This in turn sets up small scale landscaped areas which can be focal points for viewing from inside.
The planning uses offset gable forms to create external entry and dining/cooking areas, while a spa and sauna shelter helps to frame semi-enclosed garden area similar to a cloistered courtyard. The offset plan also helps to shelter the habitable external areas from the prominent westerly wind.
The living areas are pushed towards the north for sun while the more private eastern main bedroom wing is oriented towards the Tararua ranges.
As part of a larger site planning strategy the house is located to open eastern side of the property for a future orchard.
