Winter Pavilion

Wellington, NZ

Concept / Unbuilt

Aerial render of heritage Wellington home with modern extension and landscaped gardens

An ornate, and well-maintained Edwardian style two-storey villa needed a modern reconfiguration and a more direct connection to its north-west facing garden.

The brief was to open up the interior heart of the home and replace an underused later addition with a voluminous modern kitchen, living, and dining space that references Victorian winter garden houses.

The extension is connected to the original heritage building with a recessive glazed linkway allowing each building – old and new – to have their own character. Proposed materials are a simple combination of glass, steel trusses, metal cladding, and natural timber weatherboard.

As a nod to the old villa, the rhythm of double veranda posts and the horizontal line of the veranda roof are pulled through and repeated on the new extension.
